About us

A warm welcome to the Chirundu Town Council official website, a platform created for our valued and esteemed members of the public which gives you an opportunity to interact with us and ensure that information about the services we offer and opportunities in Chirundu District are made available and easily accessible to you.

Chirundu was initially part of Siavonga district in Southern Province. It was officially established as a district by the 5th Republican President, his excellency Michael Chilufya Sata, in January 2012 as part of Lusaka province.
However, in 2021, President Hakainde Hichilema relocated it to the Southern Province. Currently, the District comprises one Constituency with 12 wards overseen by 12 councilors and their respective ward development committees.

Chirundu is a town on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Province and was created in 2012 as part of Government’s decentralisation agenda and is approximately 140 Kilometers from the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka.

The name Chirundu, originates from the Goba language which symbolizes a significant hill or mountains, and the district is home to two ethnicgroups: the Goba and Tonga.
It is divided into two chiefdoms:
Sikoongo and Chipepo chiefdom.
The total District population has rapidly increased to 78,780 in 2022, as compared to 47,344 in 2010, depicting an average annual population growth rate of 4.3% that is seen to be the second highest in the province.

Economic Activities

There are a number of economic activities in the District and these include:

Clearing and Forwarding

Chirundu District is a border town between Zambia and Zimbabwe. This implies that there are a number of goods and services coming in and out of the country. This calls for clearing and forwarding. Chirundu has utilized this opportunity and a number of clearing and forwarding companies are operating which contribute effectively to the economy by creating employment.

Hospitality industry

There are a number of Guest Houses in the District that are mainly used by business persons enroute to Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Tourist Attractions

The district has the following potential tourism attractions:
a.) Home to the famous Budima dancers found in Chipepo chiefdom
b.) Best handcrafts such as wood cavings, curios and woven baskets located along Chirundu-Lusaka, siavonga and chiawa roads
c.) Best sceneries along the Zambezi and Kafue rivers which have the potential for ecotourism such as camping, boat cruising, spot fishing, canoeing, walking safaris
and game.
