Energy Minister Makozo Chikote has launched the US$90 million 100-megawatt Kafue Gorge Lower Solar Power Project in Chirundu’s Musaya Ward, a development expected to strengthen the national grid and support the country’s shift toward renewable energy.
The project which will be done by PowerChina International includes the construction of the 100MW solar PV plant, a 33/330kV substation, and a 15-kilometre transmission line to connect the facility to the Kafue Gorge Upper grid. Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months.
Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote reaffirmed the government’s strong resolve to tackle the power shortages that have hindered economic growth and reduced national productivity.
Mr Chikote hailed President Hakainde Hichilema for his steadfast leadership and unwavering commitment to ending the country’s electricity challenges while advancing long-term energy security.
The Minister assured the nation that government is accelerating power generation initiatives to close the electricity deficit.
ZESCO Limited Managing Director, Justin Loongo said emphasized that the new solar project will significantly support the national grid, help reduce the impact of load-shedding, and move the country closer to long-term energy security.
Eng. Loongo noted that this development aligns with Zambia’s push for renewable energy and the government’s commitment to diversifying power sources.
PowerChina International Chief Representative Tian Hongjun said the project, which is expected to be completed within 10 months, will bring direct benefits to the people living in Chirundu District.
Mr Tian added that the development will also enhance the country’s energy security by contributing reliable and sustainable power to the national grid.
