A team from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), led by Commissioner McDonald Chipenzi, yesterday visited various voter registration centres in Chirundu Constituency to monitor the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Commissioner Chipenzi was accompanied by the District Registration Officer (DRO) and other ECZ staff.
The team inspected several stations, including Shoprite at Chirundu Mall, Nabbanda Primary School, Njame Primary School, and New Apostolic Church, to observe the registration process and interact with Voter Registration Officers.
Speaking after the tour, Commissioner Chipenzi expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, noting that Chirundu Constituency has surpassed the 50 percent target set by ECZ.
He commended the District Registration Officer and the entire team for their dedication in ensuring that members of the public are well-informed about the Mass Registration exercise and are turning up in significant numbers with their National Registration Cards (NRCs) to register as voters.
Commissioner Chipenzi concluded the monitoring visit with an earnest appeal to all registered voters to take advantage of the 15-day extension to verify the accuracy of their details, emphasizing that no further extension will be granted once the additional days elapse.
Meanwhile, Chirundu District Registration Officer, Embassy Cheembo, reported that the current total for both new registrations and updates stands at 15,720, of which 7,000 are newly registered voters.
He added that with the 15-day extension, the district is projecting to reach at least 18,000 registrations, noting that ECZ has strategically positioned registration centres across the district—including Shoprite at Chirundu Mall—to capture as many eligible voters as possible.
Mr. Cheembo has since called upon all eligible Zambians to make full use of the extended period to obtain their voter’s cards, particularly first-time voters and those who have recently obtained their NRCs.
